Trinity Alumni Group to Honor Students for Their Service

March 28, 2003  – The Trinity University Alumni Association will honor two seniors for outstanding service to the University and to San Antonio. Jeremy Boyce of Dallas will be recognized for his dedication and commitment to the University, while Christi Larkins of Euless, Texas, will be recognized for her service to the community.

Both students will receive certificates and $250 at the Honor Awards Convocation to be held March 29 during Family Weekend. To receive the awards, exemplary seniors with service over an extended period of time were nominated by students, faculty, and staff. A panel of the National Alumni Board interviewed finalists and selected the winners.

He is majoring in communications and speech communication and has produced several videos about San Antonio, notably a documentary on Cementville, which preserves a little bit of San Antonio’s history about an area where families and employees of the former Alamo Cement Co. lived.

As co-chair of the Trinity University Student Ambassadors, Mr. Boyce has represented the University in talking with major donors and prospective donors, with distinguished guest speakers, and a variety of external audiences. He also helped coordinate the single largest fund-raising activity on campus, the Trinity National Phonathon.

He was a finalist for the 2002 Gagliardi Trophy, an award to the outstanding football player in the NCAA Division III that honors excellence in athletics, academics, and community service. He was captain of this year’s Trinity Tigers and was named a third team All-American last year by d3football.com. He also has been selected three times for the All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team.

She has been instrumental in persuading similar groups at four other San Antonio universities to form the Council of San Antonio Universities on Volunteerism and Service. Together, the groups helped to build a home with Habitat for Humanity organization. Miss Larkins also had the idea of naming a staff and faculty liaison to the Trinity volunteer group to keep more people in the Trinity community aware of its work and to participate with students. In addition, Miss Larkins served as head of the TUVAC public relations outreach, tutoring in the Edgewood School District, and mentoring at Mark Twain Middle School.

She was named Tour Guide of the Year and was a leader in a campus effort to raise more than $11,000 for the American Red Cross after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Miss Larkins also helped organize a panel discussion about terrorism after those attacks, an event that drew more than 1,500 to Laurie Auditorium on the Trinity campus. She also was a camp counselor at St. Luke’s Episcopal School, where she was lauded for her ability to relate well  to children.

In nominating Miss Larkins for the service award, Linda Salvucci, associate professor of history, wrote, “The University could not ask for a better representative to the community at large than Christi Larkins. Her dedication and enthusiasm are infinite and extend Trinity’s reputation in so many ways.”
