| National Teacher of the Year to Speak at Trinity Awards Ceremony |
| March 29, 2000 - Andy Baumgartner, the 1999 National Teacher of the Year, will speak at the H.E.B. Grocery Co. Kappa Delta Pi Lecture and Trinity Prize awards ceremony on Friday, April 14, at 4 p.m. in Trinity University's Margarite B. Parker Chapel. The lecture and awards ceremony is free and open to the public.
As a career teacher, the parent of a learning-disabled child, and a male teaching kindergarten students, Baumgartner sees education from varied perspectives. These perspectives are driven by a passionate desire to effectively influence his students' early school experiences. In his 23 years of teaching in Georgia, Baumgartner has discovered that major educational issues fall into two categories: "successfully meeting the needs of each student and upgrading the public's perception of our integrity as a profession." He believes that, "we must educate others to our needs and to the needs of the students." As the 47th recipient of the nation's oldest and most prestigious teaching award, Baumgartner travels around the country as an ambassador for education. Baumgartner will speak as part of a program honoring 17 San Antonio-area Distinguished Educators nominated for the Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching. Two of the 17 Distinguished Educators will receive the Trinity Prize, which includes a $2000 cash award. The prize, initiated by Trinity's education department in 1981, annually recognizes and honors teaching as a profession and those outstanding individuals who have distinguished themselves in the classroom and in the community. For more information, contact the department of education at (210) 999-7501. |
