This year’s event marks the 22nd year of the Trinity Prize, which was instituted by the University’s department of education to honor and recognize truly outstanding public school teachers in greater San Antonio.

Each distinguished educator will receive a $1,000 cash award, and the two winners will each receive $2,000. A panel of San Antonio business and community leaders selected the winners.

At the April 4 ceremony, the 2002 National Teacher of the Year, Chauncey Veatch, will deliver an address designed to motivate and inspire the educators. He says that two themes – literacy and dreams – dominate his instructional philosophy. A social studies teacher at Coachella Valley High School in Thermal, Calif., Mr. Veatch says, “Literacy leads to success in school, success in a career, and success in life.” He also says his teaching mission is to be a “dream-maker” for his students, not a “dream-breaker.” Since arriving at the school in 1999, Mr. Veatch has re-established the California Cadet Corps, a leadership and citizenship development program for high school students in the state with emphasis on the role of the armed forces in a democracy. This was a natural program for Mr. Veatch, a retired U.S. Army colonel, who also has taught kindergarten through 8th grade, as well as English as a Second Language as part of the school district’s adult education school. A native of Kansas, Mr. Veatch graduated from the American High School in Frankfort, Germany, and earned a bachelor’s degree in history from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., and a doctorate in jurisprudence from the University of Notre Dame. He was named National Teacher of the Year in a ceremony at the White House in April 2002.
