Art Historian To Examine Relationship Between
Dutch Life And Art In The 17th Century

Mariët WestermannOctober 20, 2000 - The relationship between Dutch home life and art in the 17th century will be the focus of a presentation by art historian Mariët Westermann.  The event, titled "Costly and Curious, Full of Pleasure and Home Contentment: Dutch Interiors in the Seventeenth Century," will take place Wednesday, November 15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapman Center Auditorium.  The event, part of the Stieren Arts Enrichment Series, is free and open to the public.

During her examination of the relationship between art and domestic life in 17th century Holland, Dr. Westermann will show how this interaction led to a notably modern definition of the "home."  The lecture is based primarily on Dr. Westermann's new exhibition titled "Dutch Intimacy and Opulence: The Art of Home and Privacy 1640-1700."

Dr. Westermann currently is an associate professor at Rutgers University.  She received her B.A. from Williams College and her master's and Ph.D. at the Institute for Fine Arts at New York University.  Her career includes curatorial segments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Gallery in Washington.  In addition, Dr. Westermann has written A Worldly Art, a book that reflects her interest in Dutch painting, Jan Steen's humor, and other secular themes in Dutch art.
