TRANSITIONAL LIVING

Students Meena Alagappan, Lisa Bowers, Logan Callihan, and Molly Vetter created a transitional living space to help break the cycle of homelessness. They titled their project Transitional Living: Step into the Future, designing the project to house temporarily four families of four people each.

“We’re combining community building with sustainability,” said Ms. Alagappan, noting that the team was inspired by San Antonio’s new Haven for Hope housing project.

Similar to the other designs, this model would transform the vacant, weed-infested lot into a verdant property with a community garden, outdoor classroom, a pond, covered bus stop, and public playground.

“We incorporated active and passive solar energy, geothermal, Styrofoam panels, wind, and other features,” explained Mr. Callihan. To save on energy usage, the design called for Energy Star appliances, but no dishwasher or clothes dryer.
