By Justin Parker
Anyone who has been to Trinity’s men’s basketball games during the past four
years has probably heard fans chanting for Coach Pat Cunningham to put fan
favorite Darsh Singh in the game. This season, fans haven’t had to chant for
Darsh – the team co-captain has appeared in every game, and every time he

Trinity Staff Members Learning to Foster Children
By Susie P. Gonzalez
Claudia Scholz, Trinity’s coordinator of research programs, became a parent
with only 48 hours notice. Although she and her husband had spent a year taking
classes, passing background checks, and signing required documents, the call in
mid-December to pick up two foster children came with little advance warning.
To make matters worse, her husband was in England on business and the couple had
to make several hurried international phone calls to confirm that it was the
right time to accept the toddlers. more>>

Former U.S. General Visits Trinity to Discuss Middle East Military Strategies
By Susie P. Gonzalez
Eight months removed from the battlefield, retired Gen. John Abizaid remains
a dedicated soldier. He visited Trinity in February as the Spring 2008
Distinguished Lecture guest after serving as the commander of the U.S. Central
Command from 2003-07. He outlined four areas of concern for the United States and said all strategies will require this nation to be patient. “We are in a
five-second sound bite culture,” he said during his talk at Laurie Auditorium.
“This will take a long time. We need to bridge the cultural gaps because we
don’t want a clash of civilization to develop.” The general also encouraged
Trinity students to join the military or become involved in other service
fields, saying, “This is the world’s greatest country. Only your service can
keep the country great.” more>>

Swing Dancing Remains Hugely Popular at Trinity
By Halcott “Hack” G. Heyward V ’10
Mike Lenneville ’03 and Lani Steffens ’03 arrived at Trinity riding the wave
of the “swing craze” of the late 1990s. Although Mike had been coming to dance
lessons at Trinity prior to enrolling, Lani’s only experience came from an
introductory ballroom class taken in high school in Tucson. Mike, Lani, and a
few friends began dancing freshman year; by 2000, the students decided to make
a formal club out of their dancing-inclined circle of friends. “We were a group
of people who hung out and played a lot,” Mike says. more>>

McLean Science Hall and Residence Hall
By R.
Douglas Brackenridge, Professor Emeritus, Department of Religion, and Janice
Sabec, Archives Assistant
Two buildings on the Trinity campus are products of major gifts from the Marrs and Verna McLean Foundation: The Marrs McLean Science Center, dedicated in December 1959 and renovated in 1995, and the Verna H. McLean Residence Hall, dedicated in October 1985. The first floor of the original wing of the science building, the Thomas Semmes Chemistry Hall, was a memorial gift of the Semmes Foundation. The McLeans, Texas oil entrepreneurs, supported a wide range of philanthropic enterprises throughout the state. Recently, their daughter, Ruth McLean Bowman Bowers, made a $500,000 gift to establish a Women’s Studies Resource Center as part of the ongoing $200 million capital campaign.
