Presidential Medallion

.. At Trinity commencements, academic convocations and other occasions when academic regalia are worn, the President of the University wears a distinctive medallion, a replica of the official Trinity University seal. The chain from which the medallion is suspended is made from 17 discs, each carrying the dates of office of one of Trinity’s presidents, including the last disc, with the initial date 1999 for President Brazil, the University’s 17th chief administrative officer.

The presidential medallion was initially introduced in 1967 and presented (bestowed) to President James Laurie at spring commencement. The medallion was a memorial to the late Paul Josiah Schwab, a former dean of the University and member of the Trinity faculty, who died in 1966. Dr. Schwab for many years contributed wise counsel to the preparation of academic convocations, including the traditional commencement ceremony. Dr. Schwab was professor of religion and philosophy from 1928 to 1961; he served as dean of the University from 1934 to 1947, and chair of the Department of Religion and Philosophy from 1935 to 1961. Upon his retirement in 1961, he was named Trinity’s first professor emeritus of religion and philosophy.
