Welcome New Tigers! How Trinity is Helping First-Year Students Get Off on the Right Paw

It's a rite of passage for many new college students - leaving home with as many things as you can fit inside a car and turning a barren residence hall room into a home.  And what better way to cool down from unloading boxes and moving into a new place than with a cool glass of lemonade?

Free lemonade from a stand run by alumni is just one way Trinity is helping first-year students make the transition to college life.  Faculty and staff also will pitch in by volunteering to move boxes for the new students into the residence halls.

This year, Trinity will take additional steps to welcome students as a record number of first-year students come to campus. According to Marcella Leung, student activities program coordinator, Trinity is one of a handful of schools that offers a Web site packed with information specifically for new students.  The site includes a calendar of events for orientation and a list of things to do in San Antonio. The site can be found at:

Before coming to Trinity, the new students were requested to read Making the Most Out of College by Harvard professor Richard Light.  The new students will then have the opportunity to hear Professor Light in person at a keynote address to be given during the first days of the semester.

Once the students arrive on campus, they will find a new handbook, a sort of survivor guide, inside their rooms.  The handbook will include information on San Antonio, snippets of Trinity history and traditions, and a contact list of people on campus.

During their first days at Trinity, students will be able to tour of the historic missions in San Antonio, visit local art museums, or even take a quick shopping trip to nearby outlet malls.

And to help the class of 2006 bond with each other, they will gather for a class picture before they hit the books.
