| President Bush’s policies toward countries claiming to have weapons
of mass destruction lack consistency, says Mary Ann Tétreault, the Cox
Distinguished Professor of International Studies in the political science
department at Trinity University. While the president seems eager to declare
war against Iraq and its leader Saddam Hussein, he is virtually ignoring
the weapons capabilities of the country of Korea, she says.
At the core of this discrepancy is President Bush’s strategy of helping another Middle East country, Israel, Professor Tétreault believes. “This is a policy to protect Israel,” she says. The American suspicion that the Bush pro-war stance is driven by his desire to ensure a steady oil supply is logical but unfounded, Professor Tétreault says. The Iraqi oil fields are in poor shape and would take several years to bring into compliance for production, she says. To learn more about Professor Tétreault’s views, contact Susie P.
