Spending as Much Time in the Boardroom as the Classroom: Preparing Future Principals for Tomorrow's Schools

November 1999  -  "A school is only as good as its principal," says John Moore, Murchison Distinguished Professor of Education at Trinity University.  With that in mind, Moore designed a master's degree in school administration that is unique in many ways.  School districts nominate participants, and Moore matches each student with a corporate partner.

The goal is to bridge the worlds of public education and the corporate board room, benefiting both.  "Educators can learn something from the business community," says Moore.  "Future school leaders are given insight into issues such as motivation, managing change and communication."  And business leaders have an opportunity to have a direct impact on school improvement.  Corporate partners include B.J. "Red" McCombs, president and CEO of McCombs Enterprises and owner of the Minnesota Vikings, Charles Butt, president and CEO of H.E.B. Grocery, Charlie Lutz, president of Bank One, and Bartel Zachry, CEO of H.B. Zachry Company.
