  Residential Life- Frequently Asked Questions
  Are the rooms air-conditioned?
All rooms on campus are air-conditioned. Depending on the residence hall, rooms may have their own thermostat or the temperature may be regulated by suite (one thermostat controls both rooms).

Can students have lofts?
Students may build lofts, however all bed parts must remain in the student’s room. Therefore, lofts should be able to include bed frames or students should plan to store parts in their room. University beds are easily bunked.

What size are the mattresses?
Currently most are 74 inches long, but long mattresses (80 inches) are available on a limited basis to students who provide us with a copy of their driver's license. Each year  Trinity is replacing older beds with longer 80 inch beds. Currently, Beze, Herndon, Isabel, Myrtle, Prassel and Susanna have long beds in every room.

Are halogen lamps permitted?
Halogen lamps are considered a fire hazard so they are not allowed in the residence halls. For the same reason, students are not allowed to have candles in their rooms.

Are microwaves permitted?
Every room is equipped with a Microfridge unit (microwave, freezer, refrigerator). Additional microwaves and refrigerators are not permitted.

Is the meal plan required?
Yes, all residential students are required to carry, at minimum, the light meal plan.

May students be released from the residency requirement?
The requirement is fundamental to our mission and only those with exceptional circumstances are approved to move off campus. Student who feel they have an exceptional circumstance may complete a petition, which will be reviewed by a panel of Trinity University administrators and students. Petitions may be found in the Policies and Procedures section.

How many seniors live on campus?
About one-third of the senior class.

When students leave for breaks, do they need to move out their belongings or turn in their keys?
Students will not be required to move their belongings out or turn in their key for breaks.

All students’ rooms are carpeted.

Is storage available?
On campus storage is not available, but there are innumerable public storage companies located around campus in San Antonio for all needs and budgets.

Yes, members of the custodial staff clean student rooms every two weeks. Student bathrooms will be cleaned and the carpet vacuumed if personal belongings are removed from these areas.

Is there a curfew?
Students do not have a curfew.

Which halls have private balconies?
Among the first year halls, only Winn and Witt. All others have public outdoor balconies. In the upperclass area, all halls have balconies that are not accessible to the public.

What items are permitted on balconies?
Because many balconies of student’s rooms and walkways are in public view, balconies/walkways must be kept neat, uncluttered and safe. All-weather furniture, hammocks, plants, wind chimes, wind socks, sun catchers, outdoor decorative lighting, in-season holiday decorations, plastic storage containers with lids (placed next to walls) and bicycles are the only items permitted and only if they meet the above standards.) Students are urged to consider proper decorum in the display of the American flag.) University furniture may not be left unattended on the balconies/walkways. Examples of items that may not be on balconies or displayed at any time are: laundry, clothing, boxes, trash, refrigerators, coolers,  stickers, neon lights, drying racks, and alcohol or alcohol containers.
Students who share responsibility for a balcony are encouraged to communicate with one another about items placed on the balcony area. All students who live adjacent to a balcony will be held responsible for splitting fines, or if they choose, reimbursing on e another for fines resulting from violations.
Items on balconies must be wholly within the balcony. Items on walkways may not interfere with normal pedestrian traffic. Building ledges that may only be accessed from a student room through a window are not considered balconies. Residents may not climb onto nor place property onto these areas, even if there are railings on the ledges.

Are there co-ed floors and halls?
All buildings are co-ed, usually with adjacent suites alternating between men and women. We have found that both sexes tend to be more civil in one another's company and adopt a sibling-like care for one another.

Where do students get their mail?
All students have mailboxes in the Coates University Center on upper-campus.

Are newspapers available?
Yes, students may subscribe at a discounted student rate to the San Antonio Express News, which is delivered to lock boxes on campus for pick-up. The student newspaper, the Trinitonian, is published weekly. Newspapers from around the world are updated daily in the library for all to browse. Newspapers may also be purchased on upper campus by the Coates Center. Some students are required/given the opportunity to order NYT or Wall Street Journal through their classes.

Are there places to secure bicycles?
There are bicycle racks located in various locations both in the residential area and near the academic buildings for students to secure their bikes. Students may also store their bikes on their balcony, but because of the possibility of theft, many students choose to store theirs in their room.

How far are the dining locations and classrooms?
No walk across campus takes more than 15 minutes. Although the campus is hilly, there are ramps to get from one end of campus to the other. Walking is definitely the preferred mode of transportation because parking is tight and the walk is short. All the First Year residence halls are located directly by the dining hall.

Is smoking permitted?
Students may only smoke on their balconies. Smoking in enclosed areas of academic or residential buildings is prohibited.

What is the rule on alcohol?
Visit the Dean of Student's page on alcohol. No one under the age of 21 may consume alcohol. Those who are 21 and over may have beer and wine in designated rooms. No other alcohol is allowed in the residence halls.
