The Language Learning Community at Trinity is a …

  1. Living laboratory for  the speaking of foreign languages

This is the main purpose of our language floors, but the needs and requirements differ among languages.

  1. Venue for cultural activities

We request that our liaisons organize one cultural activity every week. This usually includes a monthly movie viewing, sometimes with faculty introduction and discussion. There is also usually a once a month study break with refreshments. Other activities include faculty lectures on literature, politics, religion, etc.; dance performances; cooking classes (very popular); and field trips to SAMA, restaurants, cultural tours, etc. In addition, other student organizations sometimes hold their activities at Prassel, such as the annual Moon Festival of the Chinese Culture Club.

  1. Home for international students

As our international student body grows, we want them to have the opportunity to room with American students studying the languages they speak. Since we have exchange programs with universities in Mexico, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, we regularly house about a half dozen new students every semester from these schools. This has been very successful on the Chinese floor because native speakers of Chinese are few on campus.

  1. Home for returning study abroad students

One of the biggest complaints from students returning from study abroad is the lack of speaking opportunities. The language floor satisfies this need by placing upper division students of the language and international students in close proximity with students who return with good speaking proficiency.

  1. Location for tutors and language tables

Language tables are usually convened on upper campus as a convenience to faculty members, but some language tables are staffed by international students. Our foreign language tutors are hired mainly from our pool of exchange students, but also from the general international student body. When tutors and table monitors are students, the Language Floor is a good alternative for tutor sessions and language tables.

Our requirements for residing on the language floor are (in descending order of importance):

b.      You already speak the language.

c.      You are a participating member of a culture club in that language area (Chinese Culture Club, etc.).
