Sociology Major
Junior
What was it about the subject that first made you consider choosing Sociology as a major?
I came to Trinity thinking that I’d study education and wind up an elementary school teacher. I changed my mind about a thousand times, and I wasn’t even sure what sociology was by the time I signed up for a course. I am so glad I signed up, though. I took Sociology of Sex Roles with Dr. Tynes, and at the end of the semester, we had to do this huge debate. It was quite possibly the most phenomenal project I’ve ever had the opportunity to do. My group and I got really close and it was really exciting to work with a bunch of people who were so passionate about what we were trying to prove. Even our “debate enemies” (as we cleverly titled the opposing team) were fun to work with. Through community and library research, “gender adventures,” and a lot of creativity, we effectively synthesized an enormous amount of information, and I learned so much about myself. Through this incredible collaborative project, my interest in sociology just exploded. Sociology just makes sense to me. I believe that we are products of our society and our environment molds us into the people we become throughout our lives. . I have a passionate interest in people and I want to know everything about what makes us behave in certain ways and what makes us interact with one another as we do. Trinity has provided me opportunity after opportunity to come to understand that.
How do you feel you relate to the world differently now that you are a major?
I think that I am a lot more socially conscious. I work really hard to spend time understanding the Trinity community and the broader communities in which I live—San Antonio, the United States and the world. With the knowledge I have about the way people interact, the philosophies by which we live, and the differences in our cultures, it makes me really driven to understand and to show others how to understand as well. It makes me incredibly aware of injustices in our society and it makes me want to do everything in my power to correct them.
What do you like about the professors in the department?
I absolutely LOVE how each professor is there for you. Each and every professor is so incredibly interested in your well being and your thoughts and your projects and everything about…you. They seem to really care about each individual student, and they seem to really care about what they’re teaching. That incredible passion in turn drives the students. Their excitement about the subject translates in their lectures, projects, assignments, and discussions and that enthusiasm pushes the students to perform.
What do you like about the office staff?
I so appreciate that the office staff is always ready and willing to help any student with anything they need. They’re always incredibly knowledgeable and positive. They’ve worked really hard to establish a community among the majors, and always keep us informed about things we might be interested in on campus.
What are your plans for the future and how do you think your major will help you?
I suppose I’ve never thought of myself as anything but an actress. I am majoring in Drama as well, but that doesn’t mean my sociology degree will go to waste. No matter what I wind up choosing to do, I know that my sociology major will help me understand people from all walks of life. The knowledge that Trinity instilled in me has pushed me to think critically about the world in which we live, and the injustices present in our society. I believe that it is vitally important to use the knowledge I’ve garnered to better the world, if only by volunteering. Not only will the degree assist me in thinking critically about the world, but everything I learned at Trinity will help me to create whole, believable characters in my endeavors as an actress. Each role will be fleshed out with the knowledge that the character comes from a particular environment’s influence.
