C. Wright Mills Award
For nearly two decades the Department of Sociology & Anthropology has awarded its C. Wright Mills Award, the highest honor it confers, to that Sociology major whose work best exemplifies the theories and methods of the field, and that best demonstrates the “sociological imagination.” Mills’ (1916-1962) notion of the sociological imagination involves understanding the intersections of biography with history, how what individuals sense to be personal problems are often socially shared, deriving from broad historical change and institutional contradictions.
This years C. Wright Mills Award is presented to Rachelle Ramirez for her outstanding achievements in Sociology. This past summer Rachelle lived in Camden, New Jersey where she painted a mural and helped build a water catchment system for a neighborhood. She is currently working on a research project called Photovoice in which she gives the homeless disposable cameras and encourages them to articulate what their lives are like. Rachelle is a member of Alpha Kappa Delta, an honor society for sociology majors and is also President of the Sociology Club.
Congratulations Rachelle on all of your achievements!!!
