Margaret Mead Award
Margaret Mead, for years among the best known women in the world, was also the best known anthropologist, with a particular talent for bringing anthropology fully into the light of public attention. The Margaret Mead Award, initiated by the Society for Applied Anthropology in 1979, and awarded jointly with the American Anthropological Society since 1983, continues to celebrate the tradition of bringing anthropology to bear on wider social and cultural issues. The Margaret Mead Award is presented to a student who has shown outstanding achievements in Anthropology.
This years Margaret Mead Award is presented to Gabriela Chavez for her outstanding achievements in Anthropology. Gabriela studied abroad in Granada, Spain during the spring semester of 2007. She has also been invited to present her paper, Different Faces of the Moon: Deconstructing the Multiple Identities of the Maya Goddess Ix Chel, at the 2008 Latin American Student Conference in Birmingham, Alabama. Gabriela is a new member of Lambda Alpha and will be graduating in May of 2008. As for her future plans, Gabriela plans to go to graduate school for a master’s degree in Interior Design and Architecture and intends to incorporate her studies of Anthropology into her personal approaches of design.
