MISSION STATEMENT FOR THE SOCIOLOGY PROGRAM

The Mission of the Sociology program operates within the parameters of the general liberal arts mission of the University and seeks to reinforce that mission both within and outside the classroom.  Specifically, this means:

  • [nurturing] the development of intellectual insight, moral direction, and tolerance for diverse opinions through the involvement of faculty, staff, and students…
  • [giving] each Trinity undergraduate a foundation for understanding the varied domains of human knowledge and experience.
  • [developing] the skills necessary for active participation in the academic life of the University and of the larger community.  Paramount are the abilities to think in disciplined, critical, creative ways and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing…
  • [preparing] students for the lifelong quest for understanding themselves and their responsibilities in a changing world.
  • [providing] a supportive and challenging experience wherein students, faculty, and staff can realize the full potential of their abilities and exercise their responsibilities to society. . .

Further, by virtue of its intellectual purview, the program provides unique and important contributions to this mission.  Being the discipline oriented toward providing a comprehensive and scientifically rigorous understanding of social and cultural systems, it is in the Sociology program that the subject matters of various disciplines come to be integrated. For instance, in its approach to family systems, sociology examines the separate and interactive influences of economic, political, religious, media, demographic, and historical factors shaping familial roles, structures, and processes. The program seeks to provide students with the informative power, the research and analytical skills, and the critical perspectives of the discipline within a learning community of both students and faculty.
