:: Speech Communication Mission
As an academic discipline, Speech Communication has a
long and rich heritage in American universities. In the last two decades, Speech
Communication programs have experienced a remarkable growth indicative of the
continuing relevance of personal communication studies to contemporary society.
Within the context of the liberal arts and sciences tradition, Trinity's program
emphasizes the ongoing investigation of what it means to be human, including the
realization of self-potential, the recognition of responsibilities toward others,
and the capability to make reasonable choices. More specifically, speech
communication focuses on how people develop, adapt, and transmit messages
within and across various contexts, cultures, and channels in order to promote
the effective and ethical practice of human communication. Students are challenged
to study the history, theories, and research about human communication, and from
these bases to develop skills in speech communication; in critical assessment of
the rhetoric of others; and in analyzing communication problems and solutions in
interpersonal, small group, organization, public, and intercultural contexts.
