A Research Assignment for First-Year Students

Going beyond the text of Greg Mortenson and David Relin’s Three Cups of Tea.

Three Cups of Tea is a non-fiction work rich with information about Greg Mortenson’s efforts building schools in Pakistan and running the Central Asia Institute. We’d like you to pick a topic from the list provided and use the tools on this site to find articles that further inform you about the facts and ideas in Three Cups of Tea.

As participants in the Information Literacy Program at Trinity University, all first-year students are expected to be able to understand, access, and use information ethically in keeping with Trinity University's Academic Honor Code. This assignment is designed to introduce you to these skills and to deepen your understanding of the issues presented in the book.

Create an annotated bibliography for  Three Cups of Tea.

An annotated bibliography is a list of sources which provides both citations and notes on each source, often focused on a particular topic. Once you’ve found suitable sources, we’d like you to cite and describe them in an annotated bibliography.  They are used by researchers to keep track of their research, and many times to share their research with others. A well-done annotated bibliography can serve as a helpful guide for someone wanting to learn more about a topic, and understanding how to create one is essential to college-level work.

The finished assignment.

You'll need to find, read, and evaluate five sources (three scholarly sources, one general interest article, and one newspaper article) and provide citations and brief annotations of them. We'll provide you with all the tools you need to look up articles in full text. Detailed guidelines for the bibliography can be found here.

Please have your annotated bibliography completed when arrive on campus in August. Your Resident Mentor will collect a paper copy of this annotated bibliography during NSO.  Please keep an extra copy on hand as your First Year Seminar or HUMA professor may collect them as well. While the annotated bibliography will not be graded, students who complete the assignment may win the opportunity to personally meet Greg Mortenson at a reception preceding his lecture.  Those completing the assignment will have their names selected at random.
