Trinity University Alcohol
Coalition:
Fall 2006
Report |
In the fall, 2006, the Alcohol Coalition met several
times and achieved the following:
1. Reviewed anonymous survey information from Dr. Richard Reams about
the behaviors of students on their 21st birthdays. In short,
based on responses from 85 men and 127 women, we learned:
- 20% of men and 3% of women reported consuming 21 or more drinks,
sometimes spread out over several days.
- 27% of men and 44% of women reported consuming 0 to 4 drinks.
- By far, the most common negative consequences were hangover (39% of M,
29% of W), nausea and/or vomiting (25% of M, 14% of W), and blackout
(27% of M, 14% of W).
2. Met with Becky Spurlock, Director of Campus & Community Involvement
to discuss risk management policies related to alcohol and
student organizations.
3. Reaffirmed the three tenets of the Trinity philosophy on alcohol:
- we acknowledge that students will drink alcohol;
- we care deeply about student health and safety;
- and we will enforce policies and support laws related to alcohol use.
The three tenets can seem at times mutually exclusive, or in perfect
harmony with one another. The Coalition will continue to make efforts to
bring these principles in line. The group was pleased with the creation
of the Association of Student Representatives safe ride voucher program
and with the openness of the Campus & Community Involvement staff to
consider input on Risk Management policies.
4. Refined the objectives of the alcohol policy (now posted on
the Trinity Alcohol page).
5. Listened to a presentation by local attorneys about laws and
procedures related to Minors in Possession (and Consumption), Driving
Under the Influence, and Driving While Intoxicated. (Contact the Dean of
Students Office or Greek Life for more information.)
