Maroon Out

What to Know if Your Student is Going Greek

Bid day is on the near horizon. This letter from Josh Beebe, Coordinator for Greek Life and Student Programs, outlines the Greek system at Trinity University. This information is beneficial to all parents, particularly those whose sons and daughters are seeking membership or are already members.

Special events your student should consider

January 26, 2009 - Majoring in the Rest of Your Life

The SoCol newsletter advertises a program on Monday night for all sophomores (see announcements). At that program students will learn about the process for declaring a major and about the Major Meals program. The Major Meals program was lightly attended last semester, so it has been re-vamped to be more convenient and attractive to students. First year students are also welcome to sign-up for Major Meals.

Career Services
Career Services has established a full slate of programs to assist your son or daughter in their job search and grad school planning this spring.  Several employers will be on campus to conduct interviews for both internship and full-time positions, and our Spring Career Fair is shaping up to be another success!  There are still some great opportunities out there…students just get involved and be proactive!  Here are the programs coming up in January:

Majoring in the Rest of Your Life (Prassel Atrium, Monday, January 26th, 7:00 PM):  What’s next after declaring a major?  What type of careers should students be investigating?  We’ll help students work through these questions and learn how to move toward establishing a future career path.

Pre-Law Workshop (Lightner Tea Room, Thursday, January 29th, 6:00 PM):  What we wish we knew about pre-law and preparing for law school as an undergraduate. Get the benefit of insights of those who have been there.

In February, Career Services offer nine additional workshops and events, including the Spring Career Fair on February 11.  Tell your student to mark his or her calendar!  Students should RSVP for these events through TigerJobs or learn more by calling Career Services at x8321.

Scholarship Announcement:  The San Antonio Colleges and Universities Career Centers Association (SACUCCA) is taking applications for its Student Achievement Award – a $500 scholarship.  Interested students should contact the Career Services office (CUC 215, careerservices@trinity.edu) for application instructions.  Deadline is January 30, 2009.

More information about these programs is available in the TigerJobs system and the Career Services website.  Please note that dates are subject to change and students should check the website for updates.

Trinity University Class Ring Essay Competition
Class rings are something your graduates can cherish forever. They can wear them with pride and prestige. The rings will be constant reminders of all their academic achievements and will give them a tangible connection to their alma mater.

Ring Sales are coming up February 19th & 20th.  Please remind your student to enter the alumni-sponsored Trinity Ring Essay Competition by Monday February 2nd for a chance to earn $250 toward a ring purchase.  If you have any questions, please contact crystal.benavides@trinity.edu in the Alumni Office, 210-999-8405.

Positions in Residential Life
The Residential Life student staff is responsible for creating positive experiences for students who live on campus. The process will soon be underway. If your student is committed to serving others, encourage him or her to consider joining this important and fun team!

Micro Mail

This section features e-mails that were sent to all students since the last TrinitE newsletter. Parents are invited to micro-manage their students into reading this important information. For past due items, they are offered simply for information. By policy, students are responsible for information sent to them through e-mail, which serves as an official Trinity University communication tool -- because all students are assigned accounts. (Click on each heading to read the full e-mail.)

Emergency Alert Test
Why it Matters: These messages go out once each semester and shouldn’t be ignored. The Crisis Management Team meets weekly to continue to refine messages, review practices, and practice procedures. The University has built some important procedures to efficiently respond in a crisis situation. The planning, though, is never done. A crisis tests the decision-making, grit, and will of all involved. The expedience of communication in this technical era is an aid and a complicating variable. Students and parents are important partners in being prepared for a crisis. Please review the emergency preparedness page and push it to your student to read. Each semester different messages will be included along with the announcement of drills.

Review of the Honor Code
Why it matters: The academic honor code is extremely important to the institution and its students. After implementing the code in 2004 a committee is formally reviewing that implementation, the honor code, and the council and its procedures. This is an excellent opportunity for students to offer input into something that not only affects them directly, but those who follow them as well.
