Fire Escape

What would appear to be a campus emergency is actually the leisurely presence of members of the San Antonio Fire Department. During breaks in their action they frequently show up on campus for an escape from their work to either play some basketball or tennis. In this photo they are actually behind the trucks on the Trinity varsity courts just south of the William H. Bell Athletic Center. It certainly can't hurt to have city firefighters be intimately familiar with the Trinity campus when times are good, in case we need them when times are bad. We know that we will need them sooner... or ladder.

Family Weekend Coming Soon

Fall Family Weekend is fast approaching on October 2-3, 2009. The weekend will be filled with annual highlights such as the Fall Family Weekend (FFW) Nacho Hour - a Wednesday tradition moved to Friday just for you; the ParentTalk Coffee Hour at Dean Tuttle’s home; a University Update provided by Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Michael Fischer; a Q&A with Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Felicia Lee; and the FFW Brunch with faculty representatives from each academic department. Of course, there will be a theater production and athletic events to enjoy, as well.

Collectively, these offerings make for a very nice Fall Family Weekend, but a great Fall Family Weekend is focused around quality time with your student. The schedule is relatively light in order to allow for maximum down time with your student. Let them show off the campus as they experience it – where did their favorite New Student Orientation event take place? What building holds their toughest class? Where’s their favorite place to study in the library? The same thing goes for San Antonio – What parts of town have they experienced? What local dive have they enjoyed dinner? Where have they done community service? In short, let them show off the college and city that many have started to call home.

Check out the full schedule of events. We look forward to seeing many of you!

The Information Gap

Roughly 80% of all of the students who come into the Career Services office have a similar problem.  They don’t have enough information to make career decisions.  That is why the first task of most students in research and information gathering.  There are two main areas for research:

  1. Self Knowledge – Generally, we are talking about students knowing their interests, work values, and skills.  Then they need to be able to communicate this information and “link” it to potential jobs, occupations, and industries.

  2. Occupational/Industry/OrganizationOften students may have a very limited view of what their work options are.  The fact is that any major has many options for work and exploration of potential occupations/industries, and employing organizations is important.  Knowing more about these enables student to begin to formulate a plan of action that should ultimately lead them to employment.

al/InDon’t think that I have forgotten students who are planning on graduate or professional school.  I strongly recommend the same information gathering process and some introspection as to the reasons for pursuing an advanced degree and the type of programs they would like to access (for example not all MBA programs are created equal and not all faculties of those programs specialize in the same disciplines within business).

Career Services staff can assist students to begin the information gathering process and then to synthesize that information to begin their decision-making and career planning.
