Alternative Spring Break - Dominican Republic

Over Spring Break, students flew to the Dominican Republic to participate in a program run by Orphanage Outreach.  Trinity’s group of seven students and two Student Affairs staff members spent the week waking up early, teaching English lessons in a local school, and working on manual labor projects.  In the course of a week, Trinity students, along with 130 other volunteers from other schools, helped to complete a new dining facility for the orphanage.

Trinity Goes to Washington

Over the break, students went on a Student Affairs sponsored program to Washington D.C. to volunteer at various homeless advocacy organizations including soup kitchens, shelters, and day-care facilities. The students spent time doing a wide range of tasks from repainting shelter walls to preparing food for the homeless. At the end of the week the group had opportunities to meet with representatives from the Texas Senator’s office and take an inside tour of our nation’s Capitol.

Coming your way: Room reservation stress

The room reservation process for returning students has begun (note important dates at right). Current first year students (rising sophomores) and current sophomores and juniors (rising juniors and seniors) will sign up for rooms through April 3. Some tips for parents:

- Typical stumbling blocks for students are that they have either not paid a deposit or they do not have a roommate. While deposits are now due, students can pay at the time they sign up, but it will delay the process for them. deposits are required. Students with roommates are given priority in room reservation. Those without roommates can be more easily assigned as cancellations occur.

- Students have been sent room reservation guides (for rising sophomores and for upper-class students). Reading these before the process assures an easier process for students.

- Trinity typically has more students than spaces. People at the end of the process will not be immediately assigned to rooms. This is normal. If this happens to your student, assure him or her that this is normal, that spaces always become available, and that the housing situation will work out.

- If necessary, the Residential Life Office will release some rising juniors from the residency requirement to create more spaces. The students who are offered this opportunity are from the list of those who have already applied to live off-campus, but were denied.

Spring Family Weekend is Here!

The Trinity staff hopes to see many of you on campus this weekend and will miss those who are unable to participate! Spring Family Weekend is March 27-29, 2009.  This issue of the E-Parent is being sent early because family members may be on the road to campus during the usual Friday distribution.

Keys to The Career Kingdom – Part 2
Be Flexible

It may seem a bit counterintuitive to advise individuals to be targeted (the first key to the kingdom) and then say but be flexible.  But practically speaking for many new college graduates, even in the best of times, they may have to look at opportunities that will lead them to their eventual target.  In the current economy this could mean several things:  Asking questions such as “what are the skills I will eventually need to have to reach my long-term goal?” and then considering what jobs might contribute to learning those skill sets.  Understanding that no job right out of college is going to provide all of the skills that one needs to reach their long-term goals is also important.  Considering what industries or organizations are allied to those that are the long-term target is also helpful.  For example, if one’s long-term goal is to work in the airline industry, finding a job in another part of the transportation or hospitality industry such as railroad or the cruise lines  could provide excellent experience and also opportunities to network with individuals in the industry that someone is actually targeting.  Bottom line:  Think creatively and be open to taking opportunities that will provide the experiences and build a portfolio that can be used to market oneself over time.

Micro Mail

This section features e-mails that were sent to all students since the last TrinitE newsletter. Parents are invited to micro-manage their students into reading this important information. For past due items, they are offered simply for information. By policy, students are responsible for information sent to them through e-mail, which serves as an official Trinity University communication tool -- because all students are assigned accounts. (Click on each heading to read the full e-mail.)

Post-Spring Break Reality Check: Grades and Communicating with Professors
Why it matters: These messages are sent to engage students in their own success related to registration. Parents are urged to check with students to ensure these items have been addressed. Please note that students who have not updated their insurance information with Health Services have had holds placed on registration. Returning students (such as those on leave) who plan to register in the fall and have updated this information the early this summer will automatically billed for University insurance.

*Please note that a review of peer institutions reveals that most schools use this system to mandate compliance on updating health insurance records. (This is often one of those issues that is merely over-looked by students and parents in the sea of other administrative details.)
