Up and Down Market

Members of the Sigma Theta Tau sorority are co-sponsoring a see-saw marathon with the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity to raise money for the Children's Shelter.  The 48 hour saw-a-thon began at noon on April 22 and concluded at noon on the April 24. Students stopping by have given cash donations and donations from their Tiger Bucks discretionary accounts (thanks parents!).  Initial reports indicate that over $6000 was raised.

Student Accident

The Trinity community was saddened to learn early Sunday morning that two students were in a serious one-car accident near the Quarry off of Highway 281 North. A third student, a guest from Texas A&M was tragically killed in the accident. The driver was hospitalized and released and the other passenger escaped physical injury. There has been an outpouring of support and care for these young men and the many other students who have been impacted by this accident. As parents, it is not difficult to feel incredible anguish for the families as well. Your continuing thoughts and prayers for these students are appreciated.

Residence Hall Closing Information

Residence halls close at noon on Wednesday, May 13.  Residents are expected to leave 24 hours after their last final.  Only graduating seniors will be allowed to remain until noon on Sunday, May 17.  In addition to information on the Residential Life web page (next week), students will receive an e-mail to their Trinity e-mail address outlining check-out procedures.

Students living in the FIRST YEAR AREA and SOPHOMORE COLLEGE will have floor meetings to discuss check-out.  Residents must make an appointment (by Sunday May 3) for a check-out time with their RA/RM.

Residents living in the UPPERCLASS AREA (Isabel, Myrtle, Susanna, Murchison, McLean 3 and 4, Lightner, or South) will have two check-out options. This applies to juniors and seniors.

        1.         REGULAR CHECK-OUT:  Residents schedule an appointment (also by
May 3rd) with the Hall Manager for an appointment to check out.

        2.         EXPRESS CHECK-OUT:  Residents still have the responsibility to
complete all steps for check-out and turn in their room key to the Witt
                    Center between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily.  By doing Express Check-out,
students waive all rights as they relate to dorm damage charges and will
not be able to appeal charges.  If students are concerned about
damages in the room, the Residential Life Office suggests that they DO
                    NOT use Express Check-out.

Freedom and Citizenship on Campus

During the month of April the Residential Life Office sponsored Freedom and Citizenship programming targeted at first year students.  The staff promoted nine different programs and orchestrated a social awareness bulletin board competition within the residence halls.  Thirty seven different student teams participated to create informational bulletin boards about local, national, and global social justice issues.  The teams designed their boards to bring attention to subject matters that were important to them which yielded a wide range of topics including: education reform, sustainability, problems with health care, the obesity epidemic, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights, and many more.  The winning bulletin boards addressed issues of capital punishment (Calvert 3rd – 3rd Place), human trafficking (Winn 3rd West – tied for 2nd Place), homelessness (Beze 1st – tied for 2nd Place), and sweatshops (Winn 3rd East – 1st Place).

In addition to the bulletin board competition over 300 residents attended various University events such as: an Invisible Children Presentation about the international conflict in Uganda, a human rights lecture from the former Ambassador to Burundi, a speech about homelessness awareness and advocacy, as well as Dreaming Beyond Technicolor – a program about creating a more inclusive and just community.  Students were also urged to give back to the San Antonio community by participating in two University-wide service events.  The month culminated with a celebration where students reflected upon their experiences and the winning bulletin boards were announced. Representatives from the winning teams accepted awards from Dr. Angela Breidenstein, Class Marshall for the Class of 2012 and Edwin Blanton, Coordinator for Community Service & Engagement.

Senior Events

Twilight at Trinity
Seniors will celebrate the twilight of their Trinity experiences on Thursday, May 14 at the area near the Murchison Tower and Storch building. They will listen to a jazz band and see twilight fall on the skyline as they spend one last social evening together as a class. This new event is free for all seniors and if it goes well, may become a Trinity tradition. It is being sponsored and paid for by the Residential Life Office and has been organized by a committee of students and staff members. Trinity will miss its seniors. The May 14 date was selected because finals will be over and most families typically arrive for commencement activities on Friday.

Baccalaureate Vespers
May 15th at 5:00 pm in the Margarite B. Parker Chapel.
Regarding Baccalaureate Vespers, the question has been asked, "....is it a non-sectarian service that non-Christians (Jewish, Muslim or other) would feel comfortable with?" My response is that it is a Christian service that non-Christians would, hopefully, feel as challenged by and celebrated in as the Christians would be.

Let me unpack that: Baccalaureate Vespers is a Christian service: Jesus is very present in the liturgy and we pray for the church. The liturgy invites us to pray the Lord's prayer together (actually, a Jewish prayer that a Jewish rabbi taught his Jewish students, but it gets associated primarily with Christianity because of its presence in Christian scriptures and its ubiquitous use in Christian worship). In Baccalaureate Vespers the focus of both the challenge and celebration is the equipping of our graduates (and families and friends) for service in God's good creation. The challenge, for Christians and non-Christians alike, is to go forth and live into that vision.

In terms of "comfort," I'm not quite sure how to gauge that. I've attended worship services of traditions other than Christianity. They have been rich, powerful experiences for me in which I have worshipped God - I have been uplifted, challenged, comforted. I'm fairly certain that my experience is not the same as someone who is a regular practitioner.

Survey Says...

Thank you to those who have completed the E-Parent survey. So far over 200 parents have responded. The responses indicate that the current E-Parent distribution of ever-other-week is sufficient. For clarification, the Tiger Bytes newsletter is sent as a supplementary informational piece. There were some questions about this and we will make this clearer in the future. Some suggestions we will incorporate include adding more information on Financial Aid and adding more photos and short stories.

Please click here to complete the survey.

Career Services Corner with Brian Hirsch

Senior Q & A
Last week I met with a group of graduating seniors for a workshop which we titled “The Next Big Step.”  It was a review of some of the issues that new graduates face when they transition out of college to the “real” world.  Students had questions about job searching and how they are/will be affected by the current economic conditions.  We also discussed salary negotiation, evaluating benefits packages, and different sorts of health care coverage that they might be offered.  The discussion also touched on graduate/professional school and evaluating programs and also the reasons for pursuing graduate education in the first place.  The students had a lot of questions about establishing positive credit along with addressing potential issues of debt repayment after college.

While Trinity does not have a formal life-skills management course or program, Career Services and many other resources on campus can advise students who have questions.  Any student interested can contact the Career Services Office for an appointment.

Micro Mail

This section features e-mails that were sent to all students since the last TrinitE newsletter. Parents are invited to micro-manage their students into reading this important information. For past due items, they are offered simply for information. By policy, students are responsible for information sent to them through e-mail, which serves as an official Trinity University communication tool -- because all students are assigned accounts.
