Hurricane Hits Students, Families

Parents and Family Members,

On behalf of Trinity University, our thoughts and prayers are with all of the Trinity families in the east Texas area affected by Hurricane Ike. The damages, safety issues, travel arrangements, interruption of services, and disruption to routine is certainly overwhelming.

While the campus was physically spared from this ferocious storm, many students have felt the devastating affects to their homes and neighborhoods. We have checked in with the small number of students from Galveston. If your student is from elsewhere and dealing with difficulties related to the storm and its aftermath, please contact me so we can offer support to your son or daughter. I am happy to notify faculty members of the stress this has created for specific students.

Further down in this newsletter is a touching message our Class Marshall sent to the Class of 2012.

Sincerely,
Mr. David M. Tuttle
Dean of Students

Events Your Student Should Consider

September 24 - Team Vote Rocks the Vote
Held on the Coates Center Esplanade, this event will feature students debating the issues on behalf of their preferred candidates. It will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and includes live music.

October 6 - Ken Auletta
A lecture on The Future of Media and Communications at 7:00 p.m. in Laurie Auditorium. This event is part of the Stieren Arts Enrichment Series.

Micro Mail

This section features e-mails that were sent to all students since the last TrinitE newsletter. Parents are invited to micro-manage their students into reading this important information. By policy, students are responsible for information sent to them as e-mail is an official Trinity University communication tool - all students are assigned accounts. (Click on each heading to read the full e-mail.)

Note: The all-student e-mails this past two weeks, when viewed collectively, seem a bit ominous. There are many fun and exciting things happening on campus as well!

General Crime Awareness
Why it matters: It is a federal requirement  (the Clery Act) that crime statistics be distributed annually. The information gives prospective and current students a snapshot of campus and neighborhood crime.

Copyright Violations
Why it matters: For students and families it is important to note that the RIAA is watching the electronic sharing habits of students. Violations of law can result in significant penalties in this area.

Sexual Assault
Why it matters: The trauma these cases create are extreme for the victims and accused students and have a ripple affect on their friends. Men should know that sexual activity with anyone who has had any amount of alcohol can open them up to sexual assault charges.

Making Connections
Why it matters: This program has been higher in Alumni turn-out than student turn-out. It is a great opportunity for networking and is even preceded by a session on how to mix and mingle.

From the Class Marshal to the Class of 2012
A message to those from east Texas.

Career Services Corner with Brian Hirsch

This Op’s for You!

Career Services has scheduled an ambitious and diverse schedule of career events.  These are OUTSTANDING opportunities for Trinity students to explore, experience, and engage in informational programs that will move career plans forward.  These programs will help students to learn more about various options that are available to them and related to their major and skill set.  Students will have the opportunity to begin forming networking relationships with Trinity alumni who either work in a field of interest or who may know someone who does.  Individuals who are contemplating graduate or professional school also can hear information about the application process and take practice exams to help them gauge the level of preparation they require.

Interested students can RSVP through TigerJobs and if they have questions can contact our office at careerservices@trinity.edu.

Student Health 101 - Annual Health Guide

Students have been or will be sent the link to the Student Health Guide. This is an excellent resource that is also part of the Student Health 101 package all students receive.  In case you missed it last time, here is the September edition of this newsletter and the parent companion piece to encourage conversation around these topics between parents and students.

The Difference

The difference between… The Trinity Parent and Family newsletter is a hard copy newsletter that is distributed to all parents twice in the fall and once in the spring, with a special summer edition for parents of new families. The TrintE Parent and Family electronic newsletter is sent to subscribers about every other week during the academic year. ParentTalk is an interactive list serve available to parents and family members. Participants must subscribe to this list, which allows parents to respond to posts submitted by others. It is a valuable list to utilize to pose questions about local services, parental dilemmas, general concerns, and inquiries.

TrinitE Parent and Family Newsletter

Please note that all items in maroon are links or e-mails.

This newsletter is sent on alternating weeks to subscribers. On the opposite weeks the electronic student newsletter, TigerBytes, is sent to the list. Please note that any items in maroon are links to more information.

Family members are invited to subscribe to LeeRoy, a daily calendar, to learn about campus activities. It is full of information and to read the Dean of Students blog, which includes Trinity-related posts and has a link receive new articles as they are posted.
