Trinity Parents: Out of this world!

Trinity Dad Mike Foreman serves as an astronaut on the recent space shuttle mission. He is wearing a Trinity cap that he donated to the campus upon his return. Click here to read more about Mr. Foreman's trek. The hat will be on display at the library and can be viewed on Family Weekend - October 3 and 4.

Held on the Coates Center Esplanade, this is a must-do event for students considering going abroad. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is sponsored by International Programs.

September 25 - Making Connections
This is a program for students to network with local alumni. Networking skills are especially important for juniors and seniors. Alumni relations and Career Services sponsor this event, which in at the Chapman Center Great Hall from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

Student Health 101 - Parent Edition

All students receive a monthly version of this newsletter. The parent companion piece is for families to see the issues being presented to students and to encourage conversation around these topics between parents and students.

Micro Mail

This section features e-mails that were sent to all students since the last TrinitE newsletter. Parents are invited to micro-manage their students into reading this important information. By policy, students are responsible for information sent to them as e-mail is an official Trinity University communication tool - all students are assigned accounts. (Click on each heading to read the full e-mail.)

TrinAlert
Why it matters: Students almost always have their cell phones with them. Emergency messages (and test messages) will be sent as texts to students in the event of a crisis. Instructions will be brief and clear (Shelter in place; Move to upper campus, etc.) This system will not be used for anything other than emergencies.

Religious Holidays
Why it matters: The University offers an inclusive environment for students and employees of all faiths. While the Christian calendar is part of our daily lives, other religious holidays can sometimes escape the campus community. This is a nice reminder from our Chaplain.

Policy Reminders and Sanctions
Why it matters: The Drug Free Schools and Communities Act mandates that universities publish policies and sanctions to all students each year. Trinity sends this information, not only to satisfy the requirement, but to give fair notice to students of consequences for policy violations on alcohol and more.

Hot Jobs and Occupations
I am often asked by students and parents “so, what are the hot jobs?”  When I get that question I generally hesitate.  It isn’t that I don’t know, because I get that data all of the time.  It’s just that after working with college students and graduates of all ages and backgrounds, I know that pursuing what is “hot” doesn’t always turn out to be fulfilling.  The world of work is an amazing place that is evolving rapidly.  There are corporate cultures and job descriptions to suit any personality.  On any given day new job titles and occupations are invented so that customer (however that is defined) needs can be met.  And if it doesn’t exist now, someone is probably going to invent it.  To some extent, what individuals bring to the table in terms of interests and skills can guide recruiting organizations to change existing or create new opportunities.

So how do I answer the question about hot jobs?  I generally ask the question, “what interests you?” or “what are you passionate about?”  Once an individual can answer one or both of those questions it provides a great starting point for occupational research.  What occupations and industries closely match individual interests, passions, and capabilities is a much better place to start than just relying on the most heavily recruited or highest paying jobs and occupations.  Sometimes the answer means that the actual jobs are not as obvious, but with enough research and networking anyone can at least begin to move toward work, that in the long-term will be meaningful and rewarding.
