Subject: Flu Update
The H1N1 flu situation continues to evolve and the University's Crisis Management Team is closely monitoring developments. Current information from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that persons ill with flu-like symptoms, fever,100 degrees or more, with dry cough, and sore throat, fatigue, headache and body aches, nasal symptoms or stomach upset should isolate themselves until they are free of fever for 24 hours without the use of medication. This is a change since our last campus-wide e-mail, at which point the CDC was recommending isolation for at least one week.
Health Services staff is planning two seasonal flu vaccine clinics during the fall semester, one for students and one for University employees. More information on these clinics will be communicated later. The Health Services staff is also in regular contact with the San Antonio Metropolitan Health Authority regarding the anticipated availability of a vaccine for H1N1 in October. We will keep the campus community informed as we receive more information.
In the meantime the simplest and most effective actions to avoid all flu viruses include:
· Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
· Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
· Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread that way.
· Stay home if you get sick. The CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
