Subject: What Happened to the Trinity Multi-Cultural Network?

Students, please see the important announcement below:

Dear Trinity Community Member,

My name is Sidra Qureshi and I am the 2009-2010 Trinity Diversity Connection President.  Formerly called Trinity Multicultural Network (TMN), the organization will from now on be known as the Trinity Diversity Connection (TDC). What was the need for this change, and what is the philosophy behind it? In the past year, the former TMN sought to expand the definition of diversity for which it has advocated on our campus by moving away from just celebrating culture. Culture is simply one aspect of diversity; diversity encompasses gender, race, culture, national origin, ethnicity, religion, social class, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, and physical and learning ability. To advance this new mission, TMN felt that it needed to be redefined, restructured, and given a new identity entirely. This new identity is TDC. Our revised mission and values are below:

The Trinity Diversity Connection (TDC) desires to foster and support an increased concern for diversity on campus by advocating for students, creating spaces for cultural celebration, promoting leadership development and providing opportunities for education and reflection. In addition, we want to assist the University in recruiting and retaining students from diverse backgrounds and encourage student interest while emphasizing that all are made to feel welcome to participate regardless of background. To encourage this shared understanding and desire for diversity on campus, TDC provides a place where all diversity issues at large can be explored in a partnership with associate groups which focus on varying religious, cultural and diversity issues.  TDC will provide a place where all types of diversity groups can come together to celebrate, embrace and advocate for diversity.

As the TDC President, I encourage groups who feel that they fall under our new definition of diversity to join TDC and make us the better organization that we continuously strive to be. The Sexual Diversity Alliance (SDA) was voted into TDC on Wednesday September 9th, and I know that it will be a strong addition to the existing TDC associate groups. Along with new group membership, TDC encourages individuals interested in diversity issues-at-large to attend TDC general meetings where concerns and ideas of your own will be heard to help shape future TDC events and projects. The next meeting will be held on October 20th at 7:30 pm in the Woodlawn room and all are welcome to attend. Change is coming to campus, and I look forward to establishing TDC in the Trinity community and upholding it to its new mission and vision
