Dear Colleagues:
By now you will have read the message from Mr. Tim Hixon, Chairman of Trinity’s Board of Trustees, announcing that yesterday I informed the Board of my intention to retire from the presidency in January of 2010. As you might expect, the decision to fix the date was extremely difficult for Janice and me. We have abiding affection and respect for the good people with whom, and for whom, we have had the honor to work. I am convinced, however, that it is best for the University to begin now the process of identifying my successor, insuring a continuation of its current momentum in the decade ahead and the fresh leadership so important to periodic institutional renewal.
No doubt I will have opportunities before next January to express my gratitude to you individually and collectively for all you have done to make Trinity a better place. Let me say here only that the words I use on those occasions will be heartfelt, for all their inadequacy.
I look forward to our mutual efforts during the next twelve months on behalf of this inspiring place and the people that make it so estimable.
