Sexual Assault - Education and Support

During New Student Orientation and throughout the year, acquaintance rape and other student problems are addressed. The Sexual Assault Student Coalition is committed to educating Trinity students about sexual assault through programs, speakers, and publicity. Residential Life staff members receive training on handling sexual assault issues. Periodically, Health Services posts a bulletin board about sexual assault. The Trinity Department of Campus Security provides personal safety and self-defense programs on a regular basis. Brochures on rape prevention and coping strategies are available in Counseling Services, Health Services, and the Department of Campus Security.

Counseling Services

Psychologists are available at Trinity to help immediately following an assault and to provide on-going support. Counseling can help a victim to consider options for obtaining medical assistance and reporting the incident to the University and/or police. Counseling may also be helpful in dealing with unresolved issues months or years after an assault or childhood sexual abuse. Information provided to Counseling Services (CS) staff is confidential and is released only with the client’s written permission, except as required by ethical, legal, and judicial standards. The most likely exceptions in sexual assault cases are instances of imminent danger to self or others and court-ordered compliance with subpoenas.

Seeking emotional support from CS does not obligate you to file a University complaint.

On weekdays, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., contact CS at 999-7411.  During fall and spring semesters, an on-call counselor may be reached evenings and weekends through a Residential Life staff member, Health Services at 999-8111 or Trinity’s Department of Campus Security at 999-7070.

The Rape Crisis Center

The Rape Crisis Center offers individual counseling and therapeutic groups for victims of sexual assault and adults molested as children.  Call 521-7273 for more information.  Trained educators are also available to give programs on campus at no charge.  See details about their emergency care in the “What if it Happens to Me?” section.
