The student conduct statistics from the fall have been compiled and are being published for members of the campus community. In the fall, the Student Conduct Board heard 51 cases as compared to 72 in the fall of 2005. In all, students made 146 appearances to the Board. Last fall 187 students went before the Board. Of 248 potential policy violations, students were found responsible 131 times (52% of the time). Last year that number was around 40%. The average from the last 4 student conduct summary reports is 47%. The Conduct Board chair
reviews all reports and notes all possible policies that may have been
violated. This is because students have the right to notice prior to the
hearing, and it is much fairer to dismiss erroneous charges than to try to
add new ones. This leads to the appearance that there were more violations
than there may have been. For example, a student may be considered for
violating alcohol, noise, party, and hosting policies and only be found
responsible for a noise violation.
The
University received five reports of sexual assault allegations. One
person pursued a complaint by requesting a hearing. That hearing was the
only one conducted by the University Conduct Board. The Conduct Review
Board heard appeals on three cases, upholding the Student Conduct Board
decision twice and reversing one finding.
