Required Study Abroad Insurance
Trinity requires a specific insurance policy for all students
who study abroad. This applies even to students in a “Special Studies in the
US” term of study if any portion of that term is spent abroad.
This is in addition to any other policy that might apply.
There were many factors in this decision.
- First, not all insurance extends beyond the borders of the
United States. Some policies do not extend beyond certain cities or
states - or they won’t cover you if you are “out of network”.
- We cannot read each individual policy and determine which ones
work and which ones don’t.
- In addition, some things like “medical evacuation” are rarely
covered by insurance – or there is a limit on the amount of coverage.
(Such an evacuation can easily cost $100,000.)
- Our policy includes a service that simply provides for
medical evacuation and other services without setting such a limit and without
requiring that the student pay first and be reimbursed. The service
(Global Emergency Services) would have to verify the need, of course, but then
they make all the arrangements. (Medical Evacuation is only one of
several things that they provide.)
- All students abroad are considered to be “in network”.
Appropriate Enrollment Forms are provided to students by the
International Programs Office. You cannot enroll on-line. However, if a
student is already enrolled in the Trinity University student policy for the
academic year, that coverage is identical and sufficient.

Under “Benefits” you can click on “Brochure” or “Global
Assistance” for coverage details.

Annual Request for Proof of Insurance
Trinity students are required to show proof of insurance each
year before Registration opens in April for the Fall semester of the following
year.
Students studying abroad during the Spring semester should not
confuse this with the Study Abroad insurance requirement. The annual Trinity
request refers to the standard US insurance coverage required for all Trinity
students.
Since students abroad can supply the required insurance
information electronically, there should be no problem in providing this
information before the beginning of registration.
