Trinity
expects students abroad to be progressing to graduation as if they are at
Trinity.
The
very first advising appointment focuses on the student’s academic needs and how
a portion of that can be successfully completed abroad. During the appointment
advisors and students discuss university degree requirements and the
limitations or exceptions for study abroad credit within those requirements.
Departments and faculty advisors also will help the student to understand how
study abroad credit can be applied to majors and minors.
All
credit abroad is approved, within the general guidelines for such credit as
outlined in the Trinity catalog*, as elective hours to graduation; and individual
classes may be approved for major, minor, or Common Curriculum on a
case-by-case basis. Students are strongly encouraged to have as many specific
classes approved before leaving campus as possible, but there are instances
where approvals are handled by email while the student is abroad or completed
after returning to campus. A class does not always have to match a Trinity
class in order to be approved to satisfy a specific requirement. Often it only
needs to meet the intent of the requirement and generally satisfy the standards
of the university.
While
abroad the student is registered in a “Study Abroad” class for 12 hours so that
it is always clear within the system that this student is a full-time Trinity
student. After the student has completed the term abroad, he or she should
request that an official transcript or grade report be sent to the Registrar’s
Office at Trinity. The Registrar will send a copy to the Study Abroad office
for review. Once this process is completed the Registrar will post the course
title, grade, and credit (in US terms) to the student’s Trinity record.
Grades
from work completed abroad are not figured into the Trinity GPA, but graduate
and professional schools may refigure it to include all grades. Work done
abroad is not pass/fail. It takes special permission to take a class abroad
for pass/fail. It also requires permission to drop below 15 hours for a
semester abroad.
*Guidelines:
“C-“ is the lowest creditable grade.
Duplicate credit will not be granted for
classes already completed. Students are cautioned to be especially aware of
this when taking language classes.
Credit will only be granted for academic
classes generally appropriate for the Trinity degree.
