TRINITY UNIVERSITY VAN DRIVER PROGRAM

PURPOSE: Trinity University has implemented specific training for the use and operation of large passenger vans due to their unique handling requirements and special safety considerations.

APPLICABILITY: The Trinity University Van Driver Training program applies to all University Authorized Drivers (in accordance with the Trinity University Authorized Driver program) needing to operate University large passenger vans (10 passenger and above). This includes faculty, staff, students, and volunteers.

PROCEDURES: All candidates for Van Driver Authorization must adhere to the following procedures:

Van Driver Candidates must be on file with the Business Office as an approved authorized driver of University vehicles.

Van Driver Candidates will request training from the University Safety Office at, ext. 7004. They will need to provide the following:

a. Trinity University ID Number

b. First Name

c. Last Name

d. Contact Phone Number

e. Email address

The University Safety Office, or alternate, will enter the Candidates information in the Alert Driving Large Passenger Van Training program.

f. The Candidate will be notified by email how to access the program, how to log on to the program, and how to complete the program. They may access the Alert Driving program from any computer that is internet accessible. Candidates have two weeks to successfully complete the on line program. Candidates must pass the on-line program with a minimum score of 90%, and complete the check ride, prior to being authorized to operate a University van.

g. Upon successful completion of the course, the University Safety Office will be automatically notified by email.

h. The University Safety Office, or alternate, will coordinate with the Van Driver Candidate to complete a hands-on "check ride" (scheduled check rides may involve multiple Candidates completing the check ride on the same date/time).

i. Upon successful completion of the on-line program and the check ride, the Candidate will be issued a signed Authorized Van Driver card. This card is valid for 2 years from the date of issue.

This Authorized Van Driver card must be in the person’s possession to be able to check out and/or operate a Trinity University large passenger van. Physical Plant will only allow those individuals possessing a current Authorized Van Driver card to check out Trinity University vans, and will verify the identity of the requestor (i.e. compare drivers license to name on Authorized Van Driver Card, etc.).

A complete listing of all Authorized Van Drivers will be maintained on the Alert Driving website (only accessible by authorized personnel), as well as a hard copy maintained by the University Safety Office.

Prior to expiration, Authorized Van Drivers must request renewal from the University Safety Office. At which time the Driver will be scheduled to complete the on-line program as a refresher course.

Authorized Van Drivers that are involved in van accidents, must complete the on-line program as a refresher course; prior to being allowed to operate a University van. The University Safety Office will provide Physical Plant a listing of Authorized Van Drivers pending completion of the refresher course, as needed.
