  • Encyclopedia articles have gone through a rigorous process of editorial review:
    • Provides an overview and background perspective on the subject
    • Provides a list of recommended resources

Searching for Books
  • Use subject headings and search the Library catalog (Quest)
  • Use classification system: M, ML, MT
    • Materials are organized and arranged by call numbers according to their subject matter
    • Looking for a biography about a composer?
      • ML410

Journal Articles
  • Library catalog (Quest) does not provide access to individual articles within journals
  • In order to find articles it is necessary to use a journal index or database
    • General or specific databases available
    • Specific database for music:
    • RILM Abstracts of Music Literature

Finding Recordings and Scores in Quest
  • Remember: It’s not easy!!
  • Music is very difficult to organize and therefore difficult to retrieve in Quest
  • Using keywords and limits to narrow your results will help
    • Example: Rite of Spring

Historical Editions
  • Critical editions of scores usually representing specific ethnic, national, geographical, or chronological repertories
  • or
  • The collected compositions of a particular composer


  • Located in call number range – M2, M3.
