What if you inherited a fortune and a plot of land somewhere on the planet, but to get it all you had to build a house there and live in it for ten years?
What would you want to know about the place? What information would you need to know to make decisions?
Your first assignment, due Friday, September 7th, is based on this premise. You'll be working in groups of three.
We'll give each group:
1) coordinates of your site, so you can look it up in Google Maps, and a .kmz file to open in Google Earth.
2) help in setting up your site and researching the country, local area, and (closest) city.
3) all the tools you need to do your work.
Each group will do the following:
Part One: Background
1) Come up with 3 questions about your site and its context that reflect what you think is the most important information you'd like to have.
2) Use databases (see right) to research their site and its country/state/province/city to find the answers. Be sure to keep track of your citations.
Part Two: Virtual Visit (Lab)
1) Load your site's coordinates to Google Earth. [Optional--put a house from the Google 3 Warehouse on your site.]
2) Explore your site and its surroundings, using other online maps and search tools.
3) Use GE tools (image overlays, markers with links,
photos, captions, paths, polygons, etc.) to create 6 new markers that illustrate
the answers you found for your questions in Part One.
4) Create a 3 minute presentation on your work. Use Google
Earth's email "Graphic of 3D View" feature to create and save a jpg image of
your points, and put them into a presentation software like PowerPoint. Your
presentation should contain all of your work, and this is what you will hand in
for your assignment grade.
