Four Scenarios
Each RM group will work within the context of one of four scenarios related to international aid and outreach work. Small groups will learn about information resources while working together to complete a set of tasks. Hover over the squares below to read more about the scenarios. Ask your RM which scenario your group will be working with.
-
Scenario One: Nothern Iraq You’re an international aid group working to bring humanitarian relief (food and medical supplies and educational materials) to rural villages in northern Iraq. Although this region is far from the insurgency taking place in Baghdad, there are still many hazards: poor infrastructure, ethnic and tribal conflict, and crime. Use the library’s informational resources to prepare for your trip and meet the challenges presented to you along the way.
-
Scenario Two: Afghanistan In newly and hastily built schools in Afghani cities like Kabul and Kandahar, much construction work remains to be done. You are part of a larger team of volunteers and professional contractors invited in by the new government to meet these needs. But you’ll have to do your homework, and think critically about what information you need, as well as what you find. There’s no better place to start than your very own university library. Follow the instructions you receive and work together to overcome adversities and accomplish your mission.
-
Scenario Three: Damascus, Syria An U.N.-sponsored organization is sending your group on a student exchange trip to a university in Damascus, Syria. Things will not be easy; relations between the U.S. and Syrian governments have long been strained, and you’ll have to work together to accomplish tasks that will bridge the cultural gap between yourselves and your Syrian hosts. Preparation and research beforehand is key! The library has many resources and services to help you out. Follow the clues to meet these challenges.
-
Scenario Four: Indonesia A recent cyclone has devastated the infrastructure of many coastal cities and villages along several islands in the Indonesian archipelago. Your team will take part in a large aid mission to reconstruct roads, bridges, and public buildings. You’re the right people for the job, but you’ll face many obstacles and will need a lot of information and the ability to analyze and organize it in order to work through the difficulties. Use the library’s resources and tap their personnel to help you perform the tasks laid out before you.
