The King lab is interested in...

understanding how cells interact with their neighbors. Specifically, the research group is investigating the role of protein structures known as tight junctions.  These junctions help regulate movement of molecules within an organism and prevent infection by forming a barrier.  We currently use lung and kidney cell models exposed to common pathological stressors (i.e. inflammatory stimuli or high oxygen concentrations) to examine tight junction function.  Our studies focus on identifying the cellular signals and molecular mechanisms that lead to the disruption of tight junctions.  Our long-range goals are to understand how the cells control their junctions thereby minimizing the detrimental effects caused by stressors on cellular junctions. <MORE>
