Biol 3449: Endocrinology

Endocrinology is a sub-discipline within the field of physiology. We are accustomed to thinking of the nervous system as the principle biological system by which the different cells within an animal communicate with one another in the whole organism. However, in massive multi-cellular organisms (such as mammals) it is necessary for the cells and tissues to be in constant (and for the most part "quiet") communication in order for the body to function efficiently as a unified whole. Thus, this course is, in essence, a study of hormones as communicators of quiet messages throughout our bodies. As you study endocrinology, it is important to keep in mind that the hormones themselves are only one-half of the ‘story.’  In order for target cells to respond to hormonal stimuli, they must have receptors that are capable of reacting to the hormones.  Therefore, this course will also study hormone receptors in some detail.
