Characteristics of a gothic band:

• The band's sound fits into the gothic theme-- their music creates a certain creepy or surreal mood.
• The band's lyrics contain gothic themes: grotesque and mysterious.
• Appearance is Gothic -- lots of black.
• The band tours with and describes itself as Gothic.
• People who call themselves Gothic listen to the band.

Play Dead were never major movers within the Goth scene.

The Cure Was not part of the scene but their image fitted and so they were adopted into the Goth stereotype.
