George Grosz – I’m Glad I Came Back (1943)
This image is a commentary on the horrors of world war two. The rising power of Nazism caused him to regain his urge to paint about wartime cruelties. Works like this image of a skeleton in ripped clothing opening a blood red and black curtain display Grosz’s sheer repulsion for the actions of Nazi Germany. In times of war, as is apparent, skeletons were used to make strong both personal and political statements.
