TU - HHMI international research opportunities

AN EXCITING OPPORUTNITY FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH AT HHMI LABORATORIES AROUND THE WORLD!

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s (HHMI) Undergraduate and International Programs have collaborated over the past several years to facilitate the placement of undergraduates from HHMI grantee institutions in the laboratories of HHMI International Research Scholars. HHMI offers these placements to provide enriching experiences for students with leading scientists in other countries. HHMI recognizes that their International Scholars are a highly vetted group of scientists, who publish in English, and whose laboratories can provide experiences in high quality science. To date, the program has placed 160 undergraduates in Scholars’ labs. TU-HHMI has had 6 undergraduates placed to date.  Participating last year was Brian Malpede in Dr. Anja Bengtsson's lab in Copenhagen, Denmark. Participating in 2008 were Krista Prato-Matthews in Dr. Maria Mota’s lab in Lisbon Portugal and Kelly Rainbolt in Dr. Lajos Haracska’s lab in Zezeged, Hungary.

This year we will again be supporting Research Abroad through HHMI. The program spans 10 weeks during the summer, but the exact timing of the research experience will be determined by the HHMI International Research Scholar and the student.

HHMI has surveyed Scholars who hosted students in 2007, and found a preference for students who have previously engaged in independent research, are beyond their freshman year, and are majoring (as appropriate) in a life science, chemistry, or physics. HHMI will consider exceptions to these criteria on a case by case basis, but these preferences were quite clear and explict, and generally reflect the environment in these labs.

The deadline for applications and the information on the student information form for the 2010 placements is November 13, 2009, to Kimberly Messersmith, TU-HHMI Grant Coordinator (CLS 212). To download an application click here. To download the student information form click here.

As in previous years, interested students should choose up to five scientists from among the entire list of 104 Scholars on HHMI’s Web site. To view the HHMI List of Scholars click here.

For each interested student, please provide his/her name, academic year, and the names of the Scholar(s) in the order of preference and other information requested in the attached student application form.

Program Directors or students should not contact the Scholars directly until contacted by HHMI. HHMI hopes that the opportunities afforded by their Scholars will be scientifically, educationally, and culturally enriching experiences for your undergraduates. We look forward to hearing from you.

The awards include:

  • A $3,500 stipend (does not include meals)
  • Free housing
  • Roundtrip travel expenses
  • Insurance
  • One semester hour of free academic credit

What is expected of students:

  • Students will be asked to submit research abstracts prior to their experiences and written summaries focusing on their research and overall experience and the impact on their personal and professional development upon their return home
