KRTU Digital Upgrades & Studio Renovation Project

Project History

In January 2007, KRTU began planning for the largest single upgrade and improvement project to its facilities since 1985.  The project included complete renovations of on-air and production studios, the creation of new studio spaces,

cutting-edge technology upgrades, digital-router infrastructure, and improvements to the existing analogue transmitters as well as the addition of a new HD transmitter and antenna.

Planning proceeded throughout the spring, and by May 2007 the equipment, designs, and timeline were all approved.

On May 27, 2007, the day after our annual Miles Davis Birthday Broadcast, KRTU on-air operations moved to an alternate broadcast location for the first time in 22 years.  Broadcast continued from this temporary on-air booth over the summer while studio renovations, custom furniture construction and new equipment installation took place.  Broadcast resumed in the completely rebuilt KRTU On-Air Studio on October 20, 2007, just one day before the Coleman Hawkins Birthday Broadcast.

Renovations of auxiliary production studios and the transmitters continued over the winter.  All equipment and facilities were fully installed by late March.

Trinity University President Dr. John Brazil and Jim Jamison, AT&T Director of External Affairs, officially opened the new studios and commenced HD broadcast during a special on-air ceremony on April 30, 2008.

This project was made possible only through the support of the AT&T Foundation and the continuing assistance of Trinity University.  The commitment of both organizations to education and local arts enrichment is demonstrated by this grant of almost $300,000.
