The SMA Academic Placement Service FAQ
What is the taxpayer ID for SMA?
  • 86-1075348
How many schools will be interviewing at the conference?
  • That varies from year to year, but in 2002 there were 15 schools, 22 schools in 2003, 15 in 2004, 25 in 2005, 18 in 2006 and 28 in 2007.
I prefer not to have my information published in the SMA Listing of Job Applicants. I would only like to purchase the Pre-Conference Listing of Position Vacancies. However, the Placement Registration and Conference Listing Order Form suggests that I must fill out the 'job applicant form,' as well as request the pre-conference listing of position vacancies. Can I request the vacancies listing without submitting information requested on the job applicant form?
  • Yes.  If you simply want to order copies of listings without announcing a position or applying for a new position, then download the Conference Listings Order Form (.doc).
As a job seeker, do I get a list of schools that are recruiting right after I register or do I have to wait until the SMA conference to receive the listing?
  • You will receive pre-conference listings approximately two weeks before the conference by paying the appropriate fees and ordering the listings. If you would like the post-conference listing (generally includes schools that didn't meet the pre-conference deadline) as well, then you can order that for an additional fee.
Is it all online or I get something in the mail?
  • SMA Academic Placement Services distributes everything by postal mail.
Do the schools with job openings get my information immediately after I register?
  • The schools with job openings will receive a packet of all applicants (pre-conference listings) approximately two weeks before the conference. If they want a post-conference listing (generally includes applicants who didn't meet the pre-conference deadline), they may order one of those as well.  Post-conference listings are mailed approximately two weeks after the SMA conference.
I ordered pre- and post-conference listings. When exactly will I receive them in the mail?
  • The 2007 pre-conference listings will be mailed on October 15; the post-conference listings will be mailed on November 12. Expect to receive your packet a few days after each of these dates.  If your campus mail is slow, you may wish to use your home address on the order forms.
I am trying to decide whether I should send in my Job Applicant Form right now or wait until closer to the deadline of Oct. 10. What should I do?
  • Unless your qualifications are expected to change greatly between now and October 10, I suggest you register soon. That way you are ensured of being included in the packet of applicants sent to the schools. Job Applicant forms are available on the Form page found at the SMA Placement Service site.
Do you know how I can get the list of the universities that will be interviewing at the SMA conference so that I can send my application packages ahead of time? I am concerned that by the time I receive the list of the universities, there will not be enough time for my application packages to arrive at the marketing departments of the universities before the conference.
  • To obtain a listing of universities, you can order a copy of the "Pre-Conference Listings of Position Announcements." This listing will be mailed on the morning of October 15. If you register for Academic Placement Services and complete a "Job Application Form" this will serve as your "application package" to all of the schools. These will also be mailed to schools requesting listings of Job Applicants on October 15. As such, you are not required to send a separate application package to each school. However, we do suggest that you bring several copies of your vita to the SMA conference. You will also have the opportunity to meet with campus representatives personally at the conference because SMA has a small, but very personable, placement service. You may wish to bring resumes and other support material to the conference for distribution.  Most schools will contact you a few days before the conference if they wish to set up an interview with you.  They may also leave notes for you at the Placement Services message center at the conference.
I do not want my department to know that I am looking for a job. Would it be possible to purchase a copy of the job listings or simply obtain a list of the schools that are interviewing without posting my information?
Is it possible to post a confidential listing?
  • Unfortunately no. If this is a concern, I suggest that you order listings without registering for placement services by downloading the Conference Listings Order Form (.doc). You can then contact schools directly.  You are also welcome to stop by the placement services message center at the conference to leave confidential messages for schools.  However, you stand a greater chance of obtaining an interview if you contact school representatives prior to the conference.
If I am a student registering for Academic Placement Services. Must I also be a member of SMA?
  • Yes. In order to use SMA Academic Placement Services, you must be a member of SMA in good standing. To join visit the SMA website for membership information and membership forms. To utilize SMA Placement Services at the annual conference, you also must be registered for the conference. Please visit SMA's conference information page for conference information and registration.
I registered as a job applicant for the SMA conference. I know that I will be receiving a list of interested schools, but I am curious about one thing.  I do not remember a request to send in my vita.  Is this part of the process that I missed?
  • You do not need to send in a vita to SMA's Academic Placement Services because the Job Applicant Form serves as a condensed vita.  You may however wish to bring several copies of your vita to the conference.
