Graduate students are particularly encouraged to apply as there will be competitive, partial, travel stipends.
AAS President Susan Mann will deliver the James Taylor Lecture, sponsored by the Southwest Texas State University History Department, on Thurday, October 21. The luncheon speaker on Saturday will be AAS immediate past President Wendy Doniger. The Saturday evening banquet speaker will be Director-General Edward Feng of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston. A troupe will perform a Chinese song-and-dance show at the banquet.
The hotels for the meeting will be the Holiday Inn Express ($65) and the Best Western ($55). Please see hotel registration forms below (one for each hotel). Shuttle service between San Marcos and the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport will be provided upon advance request.

Vietnamese History and Culture--A Public Symposium
Americas involvement in Indochina has remained an ongoing trauma in the national consciousness. Much about the historical, cultural and political environment of the Indochina conflict has been distorted by journalistic distortion and the lack of will to really examine the issues. This symposium will focus on Vietnamese history from the perspective of the question: Who are the Vietnamese? The goal of this Public Symposium is to explore the scope of Vietnamese history and culture that includes themes such as a strong resistance to foreign intrusion, underlying philosophical and religious values, the the issue of Chinese and French colonialism, and the Second Indochina War.
The symposium includes: a series of four lectures, a reading discussion, two films and an Asian banquet experience. Each lecture will have a study guide that will include an outline of the lecture and supplementary information for each topic. Each event will include an opportunity for audience questions and discussion. This symposium is offered to interested members of the community, both on and off campus. People may attend one or several activities, as they find them of interest. For example, some people may prefer a film, while others a lecture or discussion. With the exception of the banquet, all events are open and free to the public. For a program schedule and detailed information about the symposium, please visit our website (click here). We look forward to seeing you in San Marcos!
