SWCAS NEWSLETTER

DECEMBER 2000

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF SWCAS

I have told my fellow officers of the SWCAS before, but let me use this opportunity as the new president to acknowledge the service of John Peek to our organization. John was of course my immediate predecessor, but he had been Secretary-Treasurer of the SWCAS for many years. His commitment has set a fine example of service in the profession.

Those of us who attended the annual meeting in Houston could readily appreciate the work of Hans Stockton. His careful coordination at the University of Houston made us feel welcome and ensured a very smooth meeting. I am therefore delighted to report that Hans and also Sarah Schneewind of SMU have been elected as new directors of our regional conference. Their participation will continue the trend of rejuvenating the SWCAS.

It is also my pleasure to announce that colleagues at Trinity University have agreed to host our next annual meeting. You will find a call for proposals below. Our regional meeting and the Alamo City have much to offer, and do include us in your conference circuit for 2001. Please do not hesitate to contact me or Dr. Bates Hoffer, the program chair, if you have any question about the meeting.

REPORT ON THE BUSINESS MEETING, 2000

The annual business meeting of the SWCAS was held on October 14 from 12:30 to 1:10 at the University of Houston. In addition to the election of officers (see below), the membership discussed several significant issues, as follows:

1. Phil Williams (C.O.C. Representative) reminded all members that outreach grants are available from the C.O.C. Please see the C.O.C. link on the AAS web page for information and an application form [http://www.lcsc.edu/mlevine/COC.htm]. The deadline for application is March of the year in which the outreach program will be run. The grants range in amount from several hundred dollars to close to two thousand dollars. Evidence of other funding makes an application more competitive.

2. The Board of Directors proposed the following changes to the By-laws:

3. The question of the SWCAS journal:

The membership was informed that the Board of Directors had discussed the question of whether or not to continue publishing the Journal of the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies and had decided to continue publication for one more year. The Secretary-Treasurer noted that continued publication could become an unbearable financial burden for the organization if costs went much above $600.00 per year. The membership discussed the advantages and disadvantages of publication and agreed to continue the publication for one more year.

SWCAS JOURNAL

Paper presenters at the 2000 meeting who would like their papers to be considered for publication in The Journal of the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies should send both a polished hard and disk copy to Dr. John Peek, Vice President for Academic Services, Lyon College, P.O. Box 2317, Batesville AR 72503 no later than January 30, 2001. The papers should be single-spaced with endnotes (not footnotes), using typeface New Times Roman, 12-pitch, and in WordPerfect 6.0. Papers should also conform to the Chicago Manual of Style. Submissions should not exceed 40 pages including endnotes.

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS

  1. All members are urged to check the SWCAS web-page from time to time. The URL is: http://www.trinity.edu/org/swcas/home.html. Current and past issues of the SWCAS newsletter are available on the page, as are the by-laws of the organization, calls for papers, information about the organization, a membership directory, updated information on the annual meeting, and other material. The organization owes its thanks to Webmaster Stephen Field for creating and maintaining this valuable resource.
  2. The Secretary-Treasurer proposes that at its next business meeting the membership consider amending the Bye-laws to make membership dues payable in October and that the dues correspond to the academic, rather than to the calendar year. Like the amendments proposed by the Board of Directors at the 2000 business meeting, this would bring the By-laws into conformity with established practice.
  3. If anyone is interested in writing a brief historical sketch of the SWCAS for the AAS Newsletter, please contact C.O.C. Representative Phil Williams at: phil.williams@asu.edu.
