SWCAS NEWSLETTER

DECEMBER  2001

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT OF SWCAS

First, I would like to thank Stephen Field and Bates Hoffman for hosting the 2001 annual conference at Trinity University.  They are to be commended for their efficiency and the excellence of the conference facilities.  The satellite connection with Dr. Chong Pin-lin in Taiwan was a wonderful innovation that took Stephen many hours to organize but was well worth the effort.  Second, I would like to welcome to the board Johan Elverskog, Randall Nadeau, and Margit Nagy.  Our new vice-president Hans Stockton has plans to work to expand membership and participation in SWCAS and I am confident that our new board members will be vital in helping to fulfill this goal.  I would ask that all SWCAS members share our on-line newsletter and distribute membership applications to colleagues and graduate students who would benefit from participation in SWCAS.  Finally, on behalf of all SWCAS members, I would like to thank Wing Chung Ng for his hard work as president this past year.  Upon leaving office, Wing Chung assumed the title of editor of the SWCAS Journal and I encourage 2001 conference presenters to submit their papers to him for review.  Guidelines and deadlines for submissions are provided in this newsletter

The annual meeting for 2002 will be held on Friday and Saturday, October 18 and 19, on the campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.  The application for individual papers and panels is included in this newsletter.  Planning is in progress to apply to the AAS for an Outreach Grant to sponsor a teacher workshop on infusing Asian topics in k-12 curriculum to be held in tandem with the meeting on Saturday, October 19.  It is my goal that conference panelists with an interest in topics such as women in Asia, the portrayal of Asia in film, Islam in Asia, etc. would be willing to give a short presentation and provide suggested lesson plans and further readings for teachers.  If funding permits, speakers may be invited to speak for a small honorarium and travel costs.  If you have suggestions for speakers or would like to participate in the workshop, please fill out the form attached to this newsletter.

Huntsville is one of the oldest cities in Texas and is situated in the piney woods of East Texas.  It was the last home of the Texas patriot General Sam Houston and his memorial museum is part of the university.  Huntsville is located approximately 70 miles north of downtown Houston and the closest airport is George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).  If you have any questions about transportation, lodging or any other topics related to the meeting or teacher workshop, please do not hesitate to contact me.

MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY-TREASURER

The following Bylaw amendments were approved at the annual meeting:
  1. That the name of the organization be changed to “Southwest Conference on Asian Studies” in order to bring the bylaws into conformity with the actual legal name of the organization.
  2. That the Webmaster be made a regular officer of the organization.
  3. That the terms of all officers and board members begin immediately after the annual meeting at which they were elected.
  4. That membership dues be payable in October by the time of the annual meeting so that dues correspond to the academic, rather than the calendar year.
The question of whether or not to continue with publication of the SWCAS Journal was also discussed. It was decided to continue with publication.

UPDATE FROM THE C.O.C. REPRESENTATIVE

Each of the two COC outreach programs that may be applied for in 2002 has a deadline of 16 February 2002: the ordinary COC outreach grant and a Ford Foundation “Border-crossing” in the Regions grant. For information, see p. 38 of the Asian Studies Newsletter, v. 46, n. 3 (Fall 2001), or visit http://www.lcsc.edu/mlevine/COCadv.htm. There has been quite a high success rate for these K-12 and community outreach proposals in recent years. The most recent (2001) grant in the Southwest region supported a website video and email link between a private secondary school in Santa Fe and its counterpart in the Maldive Islands.
The COC held a special day-long retreat in Chicago on 22 March 2001. Joseph Yick, who served twice as SWCAS Program Chair in the late 1990s, joined me in representing the SWCAS at the retreat. Through much discussion and debate, the COC undertook a number of activities. COC members compared and contrasted the activities of the various regional conferences as a follow-up to the detailed survey each of us filled out in December 2000 about the particular culture and make-up of our own regional conference. The group also crafted a new and more precise COC mission statement that will substitute for the vague wording along these lines in the AAS By-laws. COC Representatives also discuss specific ways to enhance COC linkages in three areas: (a) internal sharing among the COC regions; (b) with the AAS and its Board of Directors; and (c) with broader communities of interest. Finally, the group agreed on four top goals of the COC in the coming years and the key tasks necessary for achieving them.
For more detailed information about the COC retreat and other related matters, please follow the COC link from the AAS website at http://www.asianst.org.
Thank you for your interest in the COC’s activities. I have learned much from the years of service in this office, and will have played a role in helping polish and approve no fewer than three outreach grants from the SWCAS by the time I pass the baton to the newly elected COC Representative from the SWCAS, whose three-year term will begin immediately after the AAS meeting in April 2002.

Phil Williams
SWCAS COC Representative

FUTURE MEETINGS

We have yet to decide on a venue for the 2003 meeting. Anyone interested in hosting the meeting should contact President Steele or Secretary-Treasurer Tanner.

THE SWCAS WEBSITE

1.      All members are strongly urged to check the SWCAS web page from time to time. The URL is: http://www.trinity.edu/org/swcas/home.html. Current and past issues of the SWCAS newsletter are available on the page, as are the by-laws of the organization, calls for papers, information about the organization, a membership directory, updated information on the annual meeting, and other material. The website is a particularly important source of information as you plan your attendance at the annual meeting. Webmaster Stephen Field generally posts preliminary schedules, hotel information, maps and other relevant information on the website several months in advance of the annual meeting.

MEMBERSHIP DUES

SWCAS dues are $15.00, which entitles the member to the biannual newsletter, a membership directory, and a copy of The Journal of the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies. Membership is calculated on an academic year basis. We suggest that you make a habit of paying your dues in September or October—if you plan to attend the annual meeting, simply bring your checkbook and do the membership payment at the conference registration table.
