SWCAS NEWSLETTER

DEC 1998

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT OF SWCAS

It is a great honor to serve as president of the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies. I would like to thanks outgoingPresident Thomas Bellows for this successful leadership over the past year. I would also like to express our gratitude to Dr. Kenneth Hammond for his hard work in organizing the SWCAS portion of the 1998 SWCAS-WCASS joint meeting in El Paso. Furthermore, I must thank Dr. Stephen Field, our official webmaster, for his indispensable service in putting together and managing the SWCAS on-line site at: http://www.trinity.edu/org/swcas/home.html.

Last but not least I want to acknowledge the organization's appreciation to AAS President-elect Susan Mann for her excellent luncheon presentation.

I am happy to announce that the SWCAS will hold an unprecedented joint meeting with The Historical Society for 20th Century China, an affiliated society of the AAS, in 1999. The meeting will convene 21-23 October in San Marcos with Southwest Texas State University serving as the host institution and celebrating its Centennial year. Information about the conference hotels, meeting sites, and other pertinent matters will appear in the next issue of the newsletter.

Please be thinking of papers, panels, roundtable topics, and poster sessions that you, your colleague and graduate students could present at San Marcos next year. Please remind your colleagues that (1) conference papers will be considered for publication in the 1999 edition of the SWCAS's refereed journal; and (2) small travel grants will be offered to selected graduate students whose written papers are accepted for the conference.

Please send all proposals and inquiries about the grants to me. The deadline for receipt of proposals and grant requests is June 21, 1999.

The Southwest Conference on Asian Studies depends on your active participation and support. I welcome any comments and suggestions that you might have about improving our organization's effectiveness and breath.

Looking forward to seeing you in San Marcos next October.
