SWCAS NEWSLETTER

DECEMBER 1999

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF SWCAS

I wish to express my appreciation to the members of the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies for the honor of being selected as the organization's president for Y2K. I will do my best to equal the meritorious service of outgoing President Joseph Yick.

The 1999 SWCAS joint meeting with the Historical Society for 20th Century China organized by Dr. Yick was well received by members of both professional organizations and by officials at Southwest Texas State University. Thanks, Joseph! The outreach activities of SWCAS also were well received by the local community. Thus, a special thanks must go to Drs. Levine and Kagan for a rich outreach program on Vietnamese History and Culture.

Planning for the next annual conference is already underway. The 2000 meeting is scheduled to be held October 13-14 in Houston. I am currently working with Sharon Wen at the University of Houston to complete the local arrangements. Information on meeting sites and lodging will appear in the spring edition of the newsletter.

The success of the 2000 meeting of SWCAS, of course, depends heavily on your participation. Thus, I wish to strongly encourage you to attend the meeting in Houston. It is not too early to begin thinking of a paper, roundtable, or poster topic to be presented in October, 2000. Please remember that conference papers can be submitted for possible inclusion in the journal published by SWCAS. And don't forget that the conference does offer travel grants of up to $100 for graduate students presenting a paper at the annual meeting.

If you plan to participate in the next annual meeting, please send the "first call" form attached to this newsletter to the following address:
