SWCAS NEWSLETTER
MAY 2000
MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF SWCAS
Planning for the next annual conference is underway. The 2000 meeting will be held October 13-14 at the University Conference Center, University of Houston in Houston. I would like to thank the Department of Political Science and the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, University of Houston, for their generosity in acting as the local sponsors of the conference. Thanks are also due to Dr. Hans Stockton, Local Arrangements Chair. Without the dedication and hours of unpaid work of such individuals, we would not be able to hold these meetings. Information on the meeting site, lodging, and planned activities appears in the "2000 Meeting" section below. The keynote speaker for the 2000 meeting will be Professor Peter Duus.
The success of the 2000 meeting of SWCAS, of course, depends heavily on your participation. Thus, I wish to strongly encourage you to attend the meeting in Houston. Now is the time to be thinking of a paper, roundtable, or poster topic to be presented in October 2000. Please remember that conference papers can be submitted for possible inclusion in the journal published by SWCAS. And don't forget that the conference does offer travel grants of up to $100 for graduate students presenting a paper at the annual meeting.
If you plan to participate in the next annual meeting, please send the "second call" form attached to this newsletter to:

The 2000 meeting of the SWCAS will be held at the University Conference Center, University of Houston in Houston, Texas, on October 13-14. FUTURE MEETINGS
We still need a meeting site, program chair and local arrangements chair for the prospective 2001 meeting!Attempts to hold a joint meeting with the WCAAS at either Las Vegas or University of Tucson have fallen through due to lack of institutional support. If we cannot find a volunteer, we might have to explore a joint meeting with some AAS region that is further away, such as Mid-west or Southeast. It is essential that we arrange a site for 2001 before the business meeting in Houston this fall. If anyone is interested in arranging the 2001 conference, please contact President John Peek of the SWCAS ASAP!
President Peek also welcomes suggestions for sites for conferences in 2002 and 2003.
