SWCAS NEWSLETTER

SUMMER 2002

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF SWCAS

First, I would like to thank everyone for their panel and paper proposals.  This is going to be a great conference.  The complete conference schedule is now available at the SWCAS web page at: http://www.trinity.edu/org/swcas/2002meeting.html

The Asia Society Texas Center is working with SWCAS to provide the keynote speaker at the luncheon on Saturday.  As soon as the arrangements have been confirmed, the speaker's name will be added to the website.  The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Houston is sponsoring a dinner at one of Huntsville's most charming restaurants, The Homestead, on Friday night.  The dinner will be followed by a teleconference with Hsiao Bi-khim who is a Democratic Progressive Party Legislator in the Legislative Yuan of the Republic of China on Taiwan.

SWCAS received a COC Grant from the AAS to sponsor a Teacher Workshop titled: "Windows on Asia: A Workshop for K-12 Teachers on Infusing Asia into Class Curriculum."  I would like to thank Hans Stockton, Bill Cunningham and Phil Williams for all their work and input on this proposal.  The workshop will be held on Saturday, October 19, and will run in conjunction with the conference.  The schedule for the workshop will be available on the SWCAS website and conferees are welcome to attend workshop sessions as well as conference sessions.

The SWCAS board is considering a joint issue of the SWCAS Journal for the 2001 and 2002 conferences.  I would like to ask all presenters to consider submitting their conference papers for publication in this joint issue.

The weather in Huntsville in October is quite lovely.  Huntsville is located approximately 70 miles north of downtown Houston and the closest airport is George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).  Rooms have been reserved at the University Hotel.  Please reserve your room before October 3rd.

Sam Houston State University looks forward to welcoming SWCAS and we look forward to seeing you in October.  Please let me know if you require any additional information on the conference or workshop.

MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY-TREASURER

The SWCAS is currently in pretty good financial condition, with $4,537.61 in the bank as of 31 May 2002. The organization owes much to the expert financial management of Bates Hoffer and Stephen Field of Trinity University, who managed to pull off last year’s annual meeting without requiring any reimbursement from the SWCAS. Of course, when the next edition of the SWCAS Journal is printed up, the exchequer will hake a hit…

All are welcome to pay their dues at any time. If you have paid your dues recently, rest assured that you are paid up and wait one year before making further payments. If you have not paid your dues since the last SWCAS annual meeting, please fill out the membership form attached to this newsletter and mail it, along with your check made out to “SWCAS” to the address indicated.

SWCAS JOURNAL

Volume 2 of The SWCAS Journal has been published and mailed to dues-paying members. If you have not yet paid your dues, you may obtain a copy of the journal by doing so as soon as possible. Additional copies of Volume 2 are available at $10.00 each. Please note, however, that supplies are limited and that the available copies will be distributed on a “first come, first served” basis. All inquiries should be sent to the Secretary-Treasurer.

Volume 3 of the SWCAS journal is currently on hold.  All enquiries concerning Volume 3 should be directed to: Dr. John Peek, Vice President for Academic Services, Lyon College, P.O. Box 2317, Batesville AR 72503.

2003 MEETING CALL FOR VENUE

We have yet to decide on a venue for the 2003 meeting. Anyone interested in hosting the meeting should contact President Steele or Secretary-Treasurer Tanner.

THE SWCAS WEBSITE

All members are strongly urged to check the SWCAS web page from time to time. The URL is: http://www.trinity.edu/org/swcas/home.html. Current and past issues of the SWCAS newsletter are available on the page, as are the by-laws of the organization, calls for papers, information about the organization, a membership directory, updated information on the annual meeting, and other material. The website is a particularly important source of information as you plan your attendance at the annual meeting. Webmaster Stephen Field generally posts preliminary schedules, hotel information, maps and other relevant information on the website several months in advance of the annual meeting.

MEMBERSHIP DUES

SWCAS dues are $15.00, which entitles the member to the biannual newsletter, a membership directory, and a copy of The Journal of the Southwest Conference on Asian Studies. Membership is calculated on an academic year basis. We suggest that you make a habit of paying your dues in September or October—if you plan to attend the annual meeting, simply bring your checkbook and do the membership payment at the conference registration table.

If you have not paid your membership dues for the 2002-2003 academic year and would like to do so by mail, please fill out the membership form and send to:
